Client case study: designing an esg impact report for a leading protein provider

Client Overview

Sofina Foods is a Canadian-headquartered global food company with operations in Germany, the UK, and Ireland, offering well-known protein products under brands like Jane’s, Ziggy’s, and Lilydale.

Project Objective

The company sought to create its first-ever ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) impact report, laying the foundation for its sustainability journey. The goal was to:

  • Establish a baseline for sustainability efforts

  • Showcase transparency and accountability in impact areas

  • Inspire consumer confidence and engagement

  • Set the tone for the next 3–5 years of ESG progress

Design Approach

While the company had brand guidelines to maintain a cohesive look and feel, there was creative flexibility in visual storytelling. The report needed to be more visual than text-heavy, ensuring accessibility and engagement for a wide audience.

Challenges & Considerations

  1. First of Its Kind – With no previous report, I needed to build a storytelling approach from scratch.

  2. Balance of Brand and Sustainability Aesthetic – Ensuring consistency with existing brand guidelines while integrating a sustainability-forward look.

  3. Engagement Through Design – Creating an inviting, easy-to-digest document that encourages readership.

Our Strategy

  • Visual Storytelling: We used infographics, icons, and compelling imagery to highlight key metrics and initiatives instead of relying on dense text.

  • Humble Beginnings: The report opened with a narrative on where the company stands today, setting realistic expectations while emphasizing commitment to growth.

  • Consumer-Centric Language: We avoided jargon and opted for clear, relatable messaging that reinforced the company’s care for the environment, communities, and ethical sourcing.

  • Progress Over Perfection: The report established tangible goals for the next 3–5 years, reinforcing accountability and transparency.

Key Features of the Report

Impactful Cover Design – A welcoming, visually striking introduction to sustainability efforts. Data-Driven Infographics – Breaking down emissions reductions, sourcing improvements, and ethical labor initiatives in a clear format. Consumer-Focused Sections – Emphasizing how these efforts benefit consumers directly (e.g., responsible sourcing and community initiatives). Commitment Roadmap – A simple, visually engaging timeline mapping out short- and long-term ESG goals.

Results AND Impact

  • Positive Consumer Feedback: Social media mentions and direct consumer engagement praised the company’s transparency.

  • Internal Buy-In: Strengthened company-wide commitment to ESG goals, laying a solid foundation for future initiatives.

SUMMARY

By prioritizing visual storytelling and transparency, I helped this global food leader communicate its sustainability journey in an engaging, consumer-friendly way. This ESG impact report is not just a benchmark—it’s a pledge to continuous progress over the next 3–5 years, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to people, the planet, and ethical business practices. Really enjoyed reading this case study, it's impressive how design can elevate complex topics like ESG into something both accessible and impactful. I actually had an assignment recently focused on ESG reporting in the agri-food sector, and during my research, I came across Journal Publishing Service. Their Journal Editing and proofreading services helped me better understand how clarity and structure are just as important in written reports as in visual ones.
